SANTA ROSA COUNTY, Fla. -- Thousands of people in Santa Rosa and Okaloosa counties were left without power overnight as temperatures dipped below freezing.

Florida Power & Light says about 2,700 people lost power.

An outage map showed outages from Highway 90 and 281 west of Bagdad to Avalon Boulevard to south of I-10.

"The fur babies went under the blankets," said Milton resident Joy Everhart. "They were definitely cold."

The Everharts live off Avalon Boulevard.

They noticed the outage around 4:30 a.m.

“Just sitting around and getting colder and colder," Lee Everhart said. "You try to not to think about it, so you put a blanket on, but you don’t have a TV to watch because there isn’t any power.”

FP&L says high demand for electricity caused some of the outages.

Officials with FP&L were not available to speak on camera Wednesday, but shared a statement saying, in part, "FPL plans year-round for Florida's extreme weather, including the sub-freezing temperatures experienced across Northwest Florida."

WEAR News asked for more details about those plans, but has not heard back.

Officials say they will continue to watch the weather for the rest of the week as another dip in temperatures is expected.

FP&L says crews worked to restore the power in a matter of a few hours.
