Topline
President Joe Biden lost the Pacific territory of American Samoa’s Democratic primary contest Tuesday to little-known candidate Jason Palmer, marking his first loss of the 2024 election cycle, but hardly denting his chances of securing the nomination.
Key Facts
Palmer won 51 of the 91 ballots in the American Samoa caucuses Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.
Palmer, who describes himself on X, formerly known as Twitter, as a resident of Baltimore and an entrepreneur and “impact investor,” appears to have campaigned in American Samoa, posting photos to his account of residents holding up signs with his name and writing that he participated in a meet-and-greet and coastal clean up.
Biden won all other 14 races that had been called as of 10:20 p.m. ET Tuesday, with results outstanding only in California.
American Samoa, a territory of less than 50,000 residents in the South Pacific Ocean, has 11 delegate votes in the Democratic National Convention, but it does not award electoral college votes in the general election.
Crucial Quote
“Thank you to the incredible community for your support,” Palmer wrote on X, announcing his win in the American Samoa. “This win is a testament to the power of our voices. Together, we can rebuild the American Dream and shape a brighter future for all,.”
Surprising Fact
Michael Bloomberg’s only win in the 2020 Democratic primaries was in American Samoa.
Key Background
Biden and former President Donald Trump swept their respective parties’ primaries Tuesday, winning nearly all of the contests. Biden had won 487 delegates as of 10 p.m. Tuesday, of the 1,968 needed to win the Democratic nomination. Former President Donald Trump had won 393 of the 1,215 needed to win the GOP nomination.
