Eastern North Carolina — North Carolina's annual safety campaign to help remind drivers to slow down begins today, March 25.
This is part of the N.C. Governor's Highway Safety Program called “Speed a Little Lose a Lot." This event is to remind drivers of the dangers of speeding and the potential consequences, including fatalities.
Now through Sunday, March 31 law enforcement officers will be cracking down on speeders across the state.
“Speeding was the leading factor in deadly car crashes in 2022,” said NCGHSP Director Mark Ezzell.
NCDOT officials say a crash on a road with a speed limit of 65 mph or higher is more than twice as likely to result in death compared to a crash where the speed limit is 45 to 50 mph. It is nearly five times as likely as a crash where the speed limit is under 40 mph.
Speeding can reduce a driver's ability to negotiate curves or go around obstacles in the roadway. Speeding can also increase the risk of crashes and injuries where other drivers or pedestrians may not be able to correctly judge distance.
Drivers are urged to slow down and wear your seatbelt.
