BETHLEHEM, Pa. — National Democrats have largely united to condemn the attempt on former President Donald Trump’s life, but some local officials in eastern Pennsylvania have been far less civil.

In Lackawanna County — home to President Biden’s birthplace of Scranton — one staffer was suspended indefinitely for a tweet saying he wishes Trump had been assassinated.

On Saturday evening, county community-relations manager Rick Notari responded to a post by NFL Network host Rich Eisen that praised Secret Service agents who protected Trump and prayed for those at the rally.

Raup-Konsavage defended his post, telling constituents they have no way of removing him from office.

(Eisen’s post did not mention the former president by name.)

“It’s a shame the guy missed,” Notari wrote in a since-deleted reply.

Lackawanna County commissioners suspended Notari, and several of them made statements to condemn the violence.

In Berks County, Bernville Mayor Shawn Raup-Konsavage put up a menacing Facebook post appearing to reference the shooting: “#PennsylvaniaProud. Try harder.”

When called out by commenters and asked why he didn’t delete the post, which features a celebratory background image, a defiant Raup-Konsavage doubled down on his rhetoric.

Ian Mahal, of Minersville, Pa., called Trump a "Coward/Pussy/Traitor" in his post about the assassination attempt.

“I didn’t take it down and I have zero intentions of resigning,” the small-town mayor wrote.

“Better yet, there isn’t even a way for you to have me removed from office.”

And in Schuylkill County, Minersville Borough Council President Ian Mahal expressed sarcastic gratitude that Trump wasn’t killed.

“The least deserving person in this country doesn’t need to be a martyr,” Mahal wrote in since-deleted Facebook comments.

“A Coward and a rapist, and the worst president ever doesn’t deserve celebration.”
