Senator Michael Bennet of Colorado on Tuesday expressed more serious concern about President Biden’s campaign than any Senate Democrat has so far, saying that he was on track to lose and that it was up to Democrats to change that, while stopping short of calling directly for Mr. Biden to cede the nomination.
“This race is on a trajectory that is very worrisome if you care about the future of this country,” Mr. Bennet, who ran for the Democratic nomination in 2020, said in an interview on CNN.
“Donald Trump is on track, I think, to win this election, and maybe win it by a landslide and take with him the Senate and the House,” he said, noting that Mr. Trump led in many polls before last month’s debate and that polling averages had shifted further toward him since.
“So for me, this isn’t a question about polling. It’s not a question about politics. It’s a moral question about the future of our country,” Mr. Bennet said. ”And I think it’s critically important for us to come to grips with what we face if together we put this country on the path of electing Donald Trump again.”
Mr. Bennet pointed in particular to Mr. Trump’s three Supreme Court appointments and the fact that they allowed the court to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Kevin Muñoz, a spokesman for Mr. Biden’s campaign, emphasized that many other members of the Senate and the House had publicly defended the president and expressed confidence in his ability to win.
“This was always going to be a close race, and the dynamics at play are the ones we’ve long anticipated: Voters continue to be deeply concerned by Donald Trump and his harmful agenda, and the more we engage and reach out to voters, the more they support President Biden,” Mr. Muñoz said. “There are a lot of days between now and Election Day, and the hard work of earning every single vote is far from over.”
Also on Tuesday, a seventh House Democrat — Representative Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey — called on Mr. Biden to end his campaign. But for the most part, the dam of public support for Mr. Biden held in Congress, even as members expressed deep misgivings in private.
