The Rockies’ early-season express came to a halt Sunday afternoon at Seattle’s T-Mobile Park in a 5-3 loss to the Mariners.
The Rockies — who saw their three-game winning streak end and saw their record slip to 11-4 — were derailed by Mariners left-hander Justus Sheffield and undone by their own mistakes.
Colorado right-hander German Marquez, so good in his first three starts this season, was not as sharp Sunday, giving up five runs (two earned) over seven innings. Dylan Moore tagged him for a two-run homer in the first, putting the Rockies in an early hole.
Seattle’s game-clinching three-run seventh was fueled by a double error by Chris Owings, who started at third base for slumping star Nolan Arenado.
After Kyle Lewis led off by drawing a walk off of Marquez, Kyle Seager chopped a ball to Owings for a potential double play, but Owings bobbled the ball for his first error and then made a hasty, wild throw to first for his second error. That miscue opened the door for a sacrifice fly by Evan White and back-to-back RBIs singles by Tim Lopes and Dee Gordon.
Sheffield entered the game 0-2 with a 9.39 ERA, but the left-hander dominated the Rockies, shutting them out for six innings, allowing four hits, striking out seven and walking none. Sheffield’s slider flummoxed Rockies hitters and he was never in trouble.
Colorado’s offense showed up tardy and a little bit short. It scored three runs in the eighth on a two-out rally that included RBIs singles by Trevor Story, Matt Kemp and David Dahl. All told, the Rockies struck out 13 times, three of the whiffs by the struggling Ryan McMahon.
Charlie Blackmon hit 2-for-3 and extended his hitting streak to 13 games and boosted his average to .458.
The Rockies open a three-game series against Arizona beginning Monday night at Coors Field.
