Two off-duty Lower Township police officers accused of stealing bicycles last year have given up their jobs as part of a plea deal, authorities said.
Eric Campbell and Austin Craig were seen on surveillance video on Oct. 8 October removing bicycles from the area of Decatur Street in Cape May, authorities said.
“Both officers entered into pretrial intervention,“ Lt. Daniel D. Holt of the Cape May Prosecutor’s Office said in an email Monday. “Part of this plea agreement is that they are prohibited from public employment within Cape May County. Both officers have resigned their positions with the Lower Township Police Department.”
The Lower Township residents were charged with fourth-degree theft last year. Both were 28 at the time.
Other details of the plea agreement weren’t immediately available.
PTI is a diversionary program for first-time offenders with little or no criminal history. If completed, PTI offenders emerge from the program with no criminal record.
Campbell was hired in 2019 and paid an annual salary of $48,907, according to state pension records. Hired in 2016, Craig was paid $48,071 per year, the state pension database says.
