WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - The Governor’s Highway Safety Program has begun the “Speed a Little. Lose a Lot.” campaign to raise awareness on the dangers of speeding and crack down on speeding violations via law enforcement. The campaign runs from April 11 to April 15.

According to a NCDOT release, speeding contributes to almost 25 percent of fatal crashes, and contributed to 424 deaths in 2021. The vast majority of these deaths, 91 percent, occurred on non-interstate roads. The trend doesn’t look positive: between 2017 and 2021, speeding-related fatal crashes increased 17 percent.

“Law enforcement will use extra patrols and driver checkpoints to reinforce the importance of not driving over the speed limit,” writes the NCDOT.

The NCDOT also notes that 6,200 crashes occurred in North Carolina work zones in 2021 resulting in 29 deaths and over 2,500 injuries. To avoid crashes, the NCDOT asks drivers to:

  • Turn on headlights so workers and other drivers can see you.
  • Dedicate your full attention to the road.
  • Never change lanes in a work zone.
