Seahawks baseball took a hard loss in its first game this season, 8-5 against Telstar High School April 20. Hot off only three outdoor practices and light scrimmaging, the young team, mostly underclassmen, came out strong in the first inning, holding the Rebels off and scoring three runs.
The Rebels rallied to tie the game in the second, though Seahawk #57 Robert Shaw, on-base from a walk, was able to steal second and third bases; and #4 Aidric Canada batted him in, bringing the game to 4-3 in favor of the Seahawks. On a lucky double, dropped third strike and a bomb to center field, the Rebels got the lead back, 6-4 going into the fourth.
Starting pitcher #8 Gryffin Kristan switched positions with shortstop #20 Finn Harkins in the fourth. Harkins held off the Rebels while the Seahawks found no luck getting more runs.
The Seahawks rebounded on defense in the fifth, turning a double-play in the top of the inning. Canada led the bottom of the inning with a base hit, stealing second and third base during Kristan’s at-bat. And #13 Maddox Cusumano earned a double off a Rebel error at first, driving Canada in to bring the score to 6-5, Rebels’ favor.
Back-to-back doubles and a sacrifice fly in the sixth allowed the Rebels to widen the lead for good, 8-5. Harkins continued holding off the Rebels in the top of the seventh, Canada and Kristan getting on base and #22 Jordan Carrier taking first off a pitch to the shoulder. Two infield fly balls and a ground-out ended the game with the bases loaded.
“Ugh, I wanted that one,” said Coach Ed Crocker. “I couldn't ask for anything more, though. We haven't been out here … so I'm perfectly happy with what I saw. What got me down was the looking-third-strikes. We had a lot of that. We need to get the bat off our shoulders and start making a little better contact.”
Crocker said pitching was solid with Kristan’s performance earning him five strikeouts from 88 pitches in three innings and Harkins, four strikeouts from 33 pitches in four innings. Going seven innings with just two pitchers leaves plenty of options from the pitching staff in the next game, he said.
“We've got to make some adjustments both in the order and maybe defensively, but other than that, I think we're going to be alright.”
The Seahawks lost, 12-2, to Spruce Mountain High School in Jay April 22. Carrier pitched three innings and #12 Liam Thomas pitched two. Each had three strikeouts, said Crocker.
