There’s little that’s been able to slow the Bruins down of late. With wins in 17 of their last 21 games following Monday’s 3-2 overtime win over the Blue Jackets, the Bruins are looking as well-oiled a machine as the NHL has to offer this time of year.
But if there’s one thing that could slow the Bruins down, it’s injuries. And Monday came with a pair of losses from the team’s forward group, as both David Pastrnak and Trent Frederic left the victory with injuries.
Frederic’s trouble came in the second period when he took a heavy hit from the Jackets’ Jake Christiansen just over the attacking blue line. It was clear that Christiansen, who stands at a heavy-looking 6-foot-1 and 195 pounds, got the best of Frederic, too, as Frederic went down and struggled to get back up and back to the Boston bench.
Once at the bench, a frustrated Frederic made his way down the tunnel and did not return. The Bruins ruled him out shortly after the hit, and called it an upper-body injury for the third-line wing. This isn’t Frederic’s first run-in with a hit that’s knocked him out of action this year, as Frederic took a heavy blow from now-teammate Josh Brown in a November head-to-head with the Senators, and another one from the Caps’ Alex Ovechkin back in January.
Pastrnak, meanwhile, departed after Frederic, and with a familiar-looking issue appearing to bug the sniper.
Dealing with what appears to be a core issue since he appeared to step on a puck in Winnipeg back on Mar. 18, a tie-up with Columbus defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov took Pastrnak down to the ice and favoring his side. When back to his feet and the Boston bench, No. 88 made his way to the B’s room, and cameras caught Pastrnak grabbing at his right side as he made his way back to the locker room. This is now the third time that Pastrnak has grabbed at that side since that incident in Winnipeg.
Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy was not asked about the status of either player after the game.
With a quick turnaround on deck by way of a Tuesday night head-to-head against the Red Wings on the way, it’s entirely possible that the Bruins hold both players out of that showdown in Detroit, especially without a morning skate scheduled for Tuesday morning with it being the second leg of a back-to-back.
The Bruins could afford to sit both players, too, with forwards Anton Blidh, Marc McLaughlin, and Jack Studnicka all with the team as the B’s extra forwards, and Detroit entering play with just two wins in their last 10 games.
