The Celtics started strong against a Nets squad that featured multiple NBA players, while Boston itself was down some of its best players. But Brooklyn pulled away in the second half as the Celtics lost 102-95 on Saturday to finish off their Summer League schedule.
The C’s finished 3-2 in Summer League play, beating the Bucks, Warriors and Grizzlies, while falling to the Heat and Nets. The organization now heads into the offseason, and the next thing on the schedule is training camp.
The youngsters once again showed off some impressive play while mixed in with some mistakes. That’s natural for Summer League. The Celtics’ decision-makers will evaluate how the summer players looked and go from there.
Here are four takeaways from Boston’s loss to Brooklyn:
Showing out: Juhann Begarin pieced together his best game in Summer League as he finished with 25 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. He started off strong and kept hitting shots throughout the game. Begarin’s unafraid to take shots, but his efficiency had suffered throughout Summer League. But that wasn’t the case Saturday as he finished 9-for-17 from the field, including 3-for-6 on 3-pointers.
Dishing it: It wasn’t quite the 28-point scoring outburst like last time out, but JD Davison keeps showing off the vision with his second straight double-double. Davison finished with 17 points and 10 assists, compared to three turnovers. There were still some mistakes as is expected for the 19-year-old, but the talent keeps finding ways to shine. For the No. 53 pick, Davison should be worth keeping an eye on throughout the season when he’s in the G-League.
Sitting guys: Matt Ryan and Sam Hauser once again didn’t play as they sat out the final three games of Summer League. It’s unclear if that was because of injuries as Hauser (shoulder) and Ryan (ankle) were banged up in the second game in Vegas. Joining them on the bench and inactive was Brodric Thomas, who was on the bench in street clothes.
One last showing: Mfiondu Kabengele has been one of the surprises for the Celtics as the former first-round pick looked to show off for the front office. He wrapped up his impressive Summer League showing with 18 points, four rebounds and four blocks. He’s shown it a bit throughout Vegas, but his 2-for-4 mark from 3-point land also helps his versatility
