DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers appear to have lost yet another starting pitcher.
Rony Garcia didn’t make it out of the third inning, the second Tigers’ pitcher to exit early in as many days, as the Minnesota Twins cruised to a 9-1 win on Sunday afternoon at Comerica Park.
The Twins (52-44) swept the brief two-game series against the Tigers (38-58).
Veteran right-hander Michael Pineda left after just three innings on Saturday and was placed on the injured list Sunday.
Garcia was activated from the injured list on Sunday and may be going right back on it.
After struggling through the first couple innings, Garcia signalled his distress to the dugout in the third inning and quickly left the game with head athletic trainer Doug Teter.
The Tigers initially reported the injury as right shoulder soreness, which is what Garcia was suffering from during his three weeks on the injured list, although manager A.J. Hinch said after the game that it appeared to be a new injury in the bicep.
Hinch said Garcia would be “shut down for a bit.” He seems certain to return to the injured list.
Garcia hit three batters and never looked sharp, although he wasn’t helped by the Tigers’ infield defense in a three-run first inning.
Rookie reliever Angel De Jesus, who took Pineda’s roster spot, pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings, but the Twins tacked on five more against relievers Michael Fulmer and Alex Lange in the seventh and eighth.
“I don’t get caught up in the narratives, but I don’t like losing today’s game,” said Hinch, who the team is “not in a good place.”
Third baseman Kody Clemens took the mound in the ninth, his third pitching appearance of the season, allowing one run on three singles.
Tigers shortstop Javier Baez left the game with a left arm contusion a couple innings after getting hit by a pitch in the fourth inning. That also happened to be the first baserunner allowed by Twins starter Sonny Gray and the only run scored by the Tigers in the entire game. Baez scored on catcher Eric Haase’s RBI single.
Hinch said after the game that Baez was day-to-day.
