Mets blow late lead in ugly game, lose to Rays, get swept - Amazin' Avenue

The Mets and Rays played an ugly game of baseball, and the Mets blew a slim lead in the ninth before going on to lose 7-6 in ten innings.

Mets pitchers issued eleven walks—a staggering amount—in the game, with Luis Severino walking six in five innings. Coming off his best start of the year his last time out, Severino went five innings and gave up four runs—all earned—with six strikeouts to go with the aforementioned walks.

Thanks to a two-run home run by Francisco Lindor in the first, a bases loaded walk to DJ Stewart in the third, and a pair of RBI singles by Omar Narváez and Brandon Nimmo in the fourth, the Mets took a lead into the fifth inning. The team had plenty of other opportunities to score—notably the two times that Pete Alonso came up with the bases loaded only to pop out to second base and hit into a double play, respectively.

And it looked like that lead might hold up right up until Edwin Díaz served up a two-out, full-count home run to Randy Arozarena that tied the game and wound up sending it to extras.

In the top of the tenth, the Mets eked out a run when Brandon Nimmo hit a two-out ground ball with a runner on third, was called out at first base, but wound up reaching safely upon replay review on a play that was officially scored as an error by the Rays.

That was it for the Mets in the top of the inning, though, and as had been the case in this game and throughout the series, the Rays ran all over Mets pitchers—who appear to have no interest whatsoever in holding runners on—and had the free runner on third base and a runner on first via a leadoff walk by Jake Diekman. A line drive to center field ensued, and Harrison Bader attempted to make a diving catch to at least keep the game alive.

Bader missed by a wide margin, and the ball rolled all the way to the wall. It might as well have kept rolling through the ballpark and into Tampa Bay.
