In a tightly contested matchup, the Brewers ultimately dropped the series finale to the Boston Red Sox in a 2-1 loss.
The pitching from both teams was impressive, making each scoring opportunity precious. The Brewers only put together a few threatening situations, making it difficult to build much of a cushion. The team went 1-for-8 with RISP, but 12 strikeouts was enough to doom the offensive output.
Tobias Myers impressed in his 4 1⁄3 innings of work. Although it was a short outing, he allowed just one run. He gave up six hits, but with only one extra-base hit and no walks, it was a fairly comfortable outing. He left the game with runners on the corners after an infield single, but Joel Payamps extinguished the situation to maintain a level score.
One interesting note about Myers was his fastball usage. He wasn’t afraid to challenge hitters with elevated fastballs or dot the line on his arm side. There were a few pitches that leaked over the middle of the plate, but it was an overall encouraging performance from Myers.
The Brewers offense struggled just as much as Boston’s. Starter Tanner Houck, who rarely uses his fastball, was difficult for Milwaukee hitters to pick up. Houck’s slider, while capable of garnering whiffs, was actually most devastating for called strikes. Several Brewers hitters went down looking to backdoor sliders.
The most impressive stint for Milwaukee came in the fifth inning. Their hitters at the top of the lineup were laying off some dangerous breaking balls, working ahead in the count against Houck as they crafted a rally. Oliver Dunn hit a splitter to the opposite field for a sinker. With the top of the order up, Brice Turang worked a walk.
Then, who else but William Contreras to score the runner with a single on a sinker. The Brewers failed to do much damage against Houck, but nearly all of their hits came against his fastball, despite the low usage. That inning was easily the most taxing on Houck, who otherwise worked an efficient outing. He allowed just one run over six innings, along with seven strikeouts.
The rally could have been more productive, but on a chopped groundball to first base from Christian Yelich, Brice Turang got caught in a rundown to home plate.
The late innings provided a brilliant Brewers debut for Enoli Paredes. Through two hitless innings, Paredes struck out four batters. Red Sox hitters swung at 10 pitches from Paredes and ended up with nothing but empty air on five of those swings.
The eighth inning was a quick reversal in a “blink and you miss it” situation. Elvis Peguero came in and gave up a leadoff double to Ceddanne Rafaela on the second pitch. The very next offering was a sinker to Jarren Duran, who hit an opposite field single to score Rafaela.
Trailing 2-1, the Brewers had just three outs to make a comeback. The Red Sox sent out closer Kenley Jansen to finish the job. Two quick strikeouts and a close bunt attempt ended the game.
The Brewers will be disappointed with the loss, but Myers’ and Paredes’ performance are well worth mentioning as highlights for the team. The offense, though, came up short.
Milwaukee will play next Monday afternoon at 3:10 p.m. It will be the first game of four hosting the Chicago Cubs. Robert Gasser is tabbed to start for Milwaukee.
