HOW IT HAPPENED:

The offense in this match started quickly, as Ohio's (5-2, 1-1 MAC) Katelyn Whittle scored the opening goal for the Bobcats in only the 1st minute. Longwood (2-6, 0-2 MAC) responded well, as they went on to outshoot their MAC adversary 4-3 in the frame. Neither team was able to get one past the goalkeepers in the second quarter, and the score would remain 1-0 in favor of Ohio heading into the half.

The Lancers put on the pressure coming out of the half, outshooting the Bobcats 7-3 in the third quarter. Madison Wiley got things started for the Lancers, evening the game at one apiece after she floated a shot home off a pass from Maroussia Walckiers. However, Mijntje Ligtenberg scored in the 40th minute for the Bobcats to take the lead headed into the fourth period.

Longwood continued to put on the pressure in the fourth, being rewarded for their efforts by a Maroussia Walckiers goal to tie the match in the 49th minute. The Bobcats were in scoring position late in the match, and Lara Van Nunen made a miraculous diving save to keep the Lancers alive. However, Longwood would not be able to defend the rebound, and Ohio's Ligtenberg scored again to put the Bobcats up for good.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"We didn't show up in the first quarter. We have to find a way to start the games strong and play our game," said head coach Miranda Rigg following the loss. "We took back control of the game in the 2nd half with our energy and efforts on the press, which was great."

"We played some good team hockey," said Rigg. "Working the ball up the field and creating attacking opportunities for ourselves more than before."

"We need to use this game to learn and grow and show up ready to play against a top-ranked team come Sunday," said Rigg on Longwood's matchup against Liberty on Sunday.
