Final: Marlins 6, Phillies 5
The Philadelphia Phillies had a chance to complete a series sweep over the Miami Marlins Thursday night, which would have increased their record to 4-1 against two-time All-Star Sandy Alcántara in 2022. Instead, things unraveled in the ninth inning, leaving them to settle for the series victory over a team that always seems to give them fits in the month of September.
Lewin Díaz greeted Kyle Gibson with a 397-foot home run to lead off the top of the third inning, part of a three-run frame for the Marlins.
But in the home half of the third inning, Nick Maton got the Phillies on the board with a 397-foot home run of his own:
A J.T. Realmuto RBI groundout pulled the Phillies within one run in the bottom of the fourth inning, before Bryson Stott tied the game by switching places with Alec Bohm on a rather unorthodox double:
To their credit, the Marlins re-took the lead in the top of the fifth inning thanks to a long home run from West Chester University’s Joey Wendle:
But with two runners on — including Kyle Schwarber, thanks to an error from center fielder JJ Bleday — Bohm came to the plate. Already with a double on his resume for the evening, Bohm smoked a ball to center field. Bleday — a native of Danville, Pa — made another miscue in the field, allowing Bohm to drive in two with what turned out to be a triple:
After getting a much-needed day off Wednesday, the Phillies turned to David Robertson in the ninth inning to close things out. Instead, the 37-year-old gave up a leadoff double off the bat of Garrett Cooper. Bryan De La Cruz would pinch run for Cooper and score on the next play thanks to an error made at first base by Rhys Hoskins:
Dylan Floro shut the door on the Phillies in the ninth, inducing a game-ending double play off the bat of Jean Segura.
With the loss, the Phillies fall to 75-62, failing to complete a sweep against the Marlins. The Phillies are now 10-6 against the Fish this season.
Meanwhile, Don Mattingly’s Marlins are 56-80, having wasted a brilliant season from Alcántara. The Marlins will welcome the Phillies to loanDepot Park for a three-game series next week, as the two teams will wrap up their season series.
In the meantime, Noah Syndergaard will get the ball Friday for the Phillies, as they open up a three-game weekend set against the lowly Washington Nationals.
Shibe Vintage Sports Starting Pitching Performance
- After this evening’s start, Sandy Alcántara has a 2.43 ERA, 3.06 FIP and 4.7 fWAR across a league-leading 196 2/3 innings pitched. He’s still the favorite to win the National League Cy Young Award, but he’s perhaps no longer the shoo-in he’s felt like for much of the season.
- Kyle Gibson gave up a lot of solid contact against the Marlins, allowing nine hits and two home runs over five innings. All things considered, the 34-year-old was lucky to only allow four runs.
