CHICAGO, Ill. - Eastern Illinois (2-2, 0-0 OVC) volleyball lost their opening round matchup against UIC (3-1, 0-0 MVC) by a final score of 3-0. The Panthers were unable to stop the attacks of the Flames during the three set loss. The final scores were as follows: 23-15, 15-25, 19-25.
UIC came out of the gates with a high-powered attack which was tough for the Panthers to slow down. The Flames were able to hit a season-high .420 against EIU and also had 54 kills compared to the Panthers 31.
EIU was able to limit attack errors in their fourth game of the season with only 16 to their credit. Panthers held a .149 hitting percentager to raise their season average. Giovana Larregui Lopez led the team in kills with seven. She also collected seven digs.
Ireland Hieb posted a season high six kills with a team-leading .400 hitting percentage. She was also active at the net with one block solo and a block assist. Freshmans Tori Mohesky and Lilli Amettis collected five and four assists respectively.
Christina Martinez Mundo posted a team high 10 of 31 total digs for the Panthers. UIC battled Eastern's offensive attack as the Flames earned 45 digs. While the match posted low blocks, UIC still collected six compared to EIU's three.
Catalina Rochaix and Summerlyn Smith were a one-two punch at the setter spot with both combining for 23 of 28 assists. Rochaix led the group with 13 while Smith earned 10. Smith also hit three service aces to lead all players in the match.
The Flames were led by their season kills leader Martina DeLucchi with 19 and a .452 hitting percentage. Sohila Wafeek also collected 44 out of 52 assits for her team. UIC will play Pacific at 4:00 p.m. tomorrow for their Friday opponent.
EIU will return tomorrow night at 6 p.m. as they play the host team of the Windy City Invitational, Chicago State. The match will be streamed on FloSports with LiveStats.
