CISCO – Five Jacksboro turnovers proved to be the Tigers’ downfall Friday night, as the visitors let a 14-0 lead slip away and the host Loboes pulled away late with a 41-28 victory.
Jacksboro slips to 2-2 with Cisco going to 3-1.
The Tigers looked to take control early, Baylor Laake capping a 32-yard drive with a 13-yard scoring run around the left side. Seconds later, Laake recovered a muffed kickoff to give the Tigers great field position at the Lobo 35 which it did nothing with.
The squads exchanged punts with Jacksboro going on a sustained 75-yard drive. Completions from Lando Belcher to Kaleem Howard and Laake moved the ball into Cisco territory at the 41.
On third-and-long from the 28 Belcher found Cannon Valenzuela with the scoring toss extending the lead to 14-0 after the second of two Randall Bustos extra points with 11:18 to go in the half.
Sensing the game slipping away, Cisco marched 71 yards on the ensuing drive. A 33-yard Hunter Long run set up Trenton Hudson’s 16-yard score to cut the lead to 14-7.
Cisco recovered a muffed Jacksboro kick and went 48 yards in 10 plays, the last two from Long to tie the game at 14. Long, a senior quarterback, had 36 carries for 161 yards in the game.
Luke Sams’ 57-yard kick return set Jacksboro up at the Cisco 24. Two plays later, another Tiger fumble was recovered by the Loboes.
A 66-yard, 10-play drive ended with Long finding Cade Gayle with a 27-yard scoring toss to give the hosts a 21-14 lead at the half.
Jacksboro had the ball to start the second half. Three plays in, Gayle’s interception gave Cisco the ball at its 24. Thirteen plays later, Long scored on a oneyard dive to extend the lead to 28-14 with 4:49 left in the third.
A second Cisco interception started a drive from the Tiger 18. The 82-yard drive ended on Tre Brackeen’s 30-yard scoring jaunt to extend the lead to 35-14 with 11:13 to go.
Jacksboro held its own in the fourth quarter, needing three plays after a punt to go 70 yards. Sams went the final 54 steps to pay dirt to cut the lead to 35-21 with 6:10 left. Laake recovered the onside kick and the Tigers’ comeback march continued with Belcher and Howard combining on a quick slant route for the 18-yard score. Bustos tacked on the extra point with 4:51 to go.
It wasn’t to be, however, as Cisco score on the ensuing drive and the Lobo defense came through with another interception with 2:15 left to seal the deal.
Cisco outgained Jacksboro in total yards 407-294 in the game.
