The Cardinals continued their three-game set against the White Sox on Tuesday, with Jack Flaherty facing off against former high school teammate Lucas Giolito. While Flaherty wasn’t at his sharpest in Tuesday’s contest, he had some really bad breaks in the first couple of innings. Edmundo Sosa, Tommy Edman, and Nolan Arenado combined for three errors on routine plays in the first two innings, and Jack didn’t help himself with a number of wild pitches thrown in the dirt. In the end, only three of the seven runs given up by Flaherty were earned. Giolito threw a solid six innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits as the Cardinals continued to struggle on offense.
1st Inning
Tommy Edman led off the game and lined a 1-1 changeup to right for the first out. Dylan Carlson struck out looking at a changeup that tailed into the middle of the zone for out number two. Paul Goldschmidt lined a pitch into the left-center gap and tried to stretch it into a double, but he was tagged out after a perfect throw from Andrew Vaughn to put the Cardinals down in order.
Tim Anderson led off for the White Sox and reached on an error as Edmundo Sosa bobbled a routine ground ball. Adam Eaton tried to drag bunt the first pitch he saw and he pulled back the offer as the pitch caught him on his back foot to put two on with no one out. Yoan Moncada lined a 3-2 curveball to Edman in right for the first out as Anderson tagged up and advanced to third. Jose Abreu, with runners at the corners and one away, hit a swinging bunt down the third baseline on the ninth pitch of his at-bat. Flaherty got the out at first with a great play, but Anderson scored to give the Sox a 1-0 lead. Yermin Mercedes flew a 1-1 fastball to right field but Edman dropped the catch, allowing Eaton to score on another error by the Cardinals to put Chicago up 2-0. Vaughn then flew a 1-1 slider to the warning track in center for the final out of the inning.
2nd Inning
Nolan Arenado knocked a 1-1 slider back up the middle for a leadoff single. Yadier Molina fell in an 0-2 hole and grounded into a 6-4-3 twin-killing. Matt Carpenter skied a 1-2 fastball to center to retire the Cards’ side.
Zack Collins singled on a first-pitch fastball and took second on the wild 1-2 pitch to Leury Garcia. Garcia took a 3-2 fastball off the plate for a walk. Nick Madrigal got jammed on an 0-2 fastball that fell in shallow center for an RBI single and a 3-0 lead for the White Sox.
Anderson grounded a ball hard to Arenado who bobbled it for yet another Cardinals error to load the bases. Eaton got under a 2-1 slider and popped out to Goldschmidt for the first out. Moncada, with the bases still loaded, walked on a 3-1 fastball that missed outside, stretching Chicago’s lead to 4-0. Abreu chased an 0-2 fastball low and away for the second out. The 1-2 pitch to Mercedes was in the dirt and outside as it got by Molina. The runners advanced to bring the score to 5-0. Mercedes struck out to end another long inning for Flaherty.
3rd Inning
Sosa ripped a 1-0 fastball off the wall in center field for a leadoff double. Lane Thomas worked the count full and grounded a fastball to Moncada, but the throw to first was in the dirt and Abreu couldn’t handle it. Max Moroff followed the error with a popout to right field for the first out. Edman chopped a ball back at Giolito who deflected it, preventing any play on the ball and loading the bases. Carlson flew out to Eaton in the right field corner, allowing Sosa to score to close the deficit to 5-1 while Thomas advanced to third. Goldschmidt grounded a 2-0 changeup to third for the final out of the top half.
Vaughn took a 1-2 fastball to the back and took first to start the bottom of the inning. Collins went down looking at a 2-2 slider for the first out. Garcia grounded a 1-2 slider to Moroff’s left, and Moroff threw to second on a nice play to get the lead runner for the second out. Madrigal chopped a 1-2 slider up the middle where Sosa flipped the ball to second but failed to get the lead runner. Anderson hit another ground ball to Sosa who got the force out at second to end the third.
4th Inning
Arenado smoked a first-pitch slider down the left field line for a leadoff double. Yadi chased a slider nowhere near the zone for out number one. Carpenter snuck a line drive through the shift to put runners on the corners with one away. The 0-2 pitch to Sosa went wild, scoring Arenado to bring the score to 5-2 and moving Carpenter to second. Sosa then popped up a 1-2 changeup for the second out. Thomas went down swinging over a 1-2 slider for the final out.
Eaton singled on a 1-1 changeup to start the bottom of the inning. Moncada hit a sharp ground ball to Moroff who could only get the out at first. Abreu followed and hammered a hanging slider for a no-doubt two-run shot to stretch the lead to 7-2.
Mercedes grounded a 1-2 slider softly to Goldschmidt for the second out. Vaughn kept the inning alive with a single on a 2-2 fastball, which ended Flaherty’s start. Tyler Webb entered the game in relief and got Collins to fly out on a 2-0 sinker.
5th Inning
Moroff struck out looking at a 2-2 changeup to lead off the fifth. Edman slapped a 1-2 changeup into Moncada’s glove for the second out. Carlson grounded an 0-1 changeup to second as the Cards went down quietly in the fifth.
Garcia lined a changeup to left field for the first out of the bottom of the inning. Madrigal drove an 0-1 changeup back up the middle for a one-out hit. Anderson went down swinging and Madrigal was caught stealing on the first pitch to Eaton to close the inning.
6th Inning
Goldschmidt grounded out to second on a 1-2 slider to start the sixth. Arenado struck out swinging over another slider. Molina topped yet another slider to third as the Cardinals went down in order again.
Eaton flew a 1-2 curveball to right for the first out. Moncada shot a 2-0 fastball to right for a one-out hit. Junior Fernandez then relieved Webb and threw wild on a 1-1 pitch to Abreu, allowing Moncada to advance to second. Fernandez then balked Moncada to third. Abreu singled to center to score Moncada to make it 8-2. Mercedes grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
7th Inning
Codi Heuer replaced Giolito in the seventh and gave up a double to Carpenter on a 3-2 sinker. Sosa chopped a 1-1 sinker to third for the first out. Thomas then tore a liner straight at Moncada for the second out. Moroff dropped a 1-0 sinker into right-center for his first Cardinals hit and scored Carpenter to make it 8-3.
Edman worked a seven-pitch at-bat but grounded out to second to send it to the bottom of the seventh.
Vaughn led off with a flyout on a 1-0 sinker. Collins struck out swinging at a 1-2 changeup for the second out. Garcia extended the inning with a two-out single to center, but Madrigal grounded out to second to send the game to the eighth.
8th Inning
Evan Marshall replaced Heuer in the eighth and gave up a hit as Carlson took a 2-1 changeup the other way. Goldschmidt grounded into a 5-4-3 double play and Arenado topped a curveball to ground out to third in another quiet inning for the St. Louis bats.
Anderson and Eaton both grounded out to short to start the bottom of the eighth. Moncada worked a 3-2 count before doubling to right-center. Abreu popped out to shortstop to end the inning.
9th Inning
Garrett Crochet replaced Marshall in the ninth for the White Sox. Molina led off the ninth with a double down the left field line. Carpenter walked on a 3-2 slider. Sosa then walked on four pitches to load the bases. Liam Hendriks got the call to put out the fire after the walk and he greeted Thomas with a three-pitch strikeout. Moroff also struck out on a 1-2 fastball above the zone. Edman managed to work a full count but went down looking as Hendriks struck out the side to end the game.
The Cardinals slide to 26-22 on the season after the loss as the White Sox improve to 28-19. John Gant will start Wednesday’s series finale for the Cardinals across from Carlos Rodon. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:10 PM CT.

Per the Cardinals post-game show, the Cardinals, as of tonight’s final, lead the MLB in walks with 210, walks with the bases loaded with 13, are tied for the most batters hit at 36, and have thrown the second most wild pitches at 31.
