ST. PETERSBURG — There was a steady breeze at Tropicana Field on Saturday afternoon.
The matchup between the teams with the most batter strikeouts in each league threatened history, as the Rays and Phillies combined to strike out 31 times, four off the major-league nine-inning record.
“That’s the way today,” Rays DH Austin Meadows said. “Thirty-one, that’s a big number. But we continue to try to not worry about that and just try to win the game.”
Certainly the pitching had something to do with it, as Phillies starter Zach Wheeler fanned a career-high 14 in seven innings and Rays starter Ryan Yarbrough got eight in 4 1/3.
“They had a good pitcher out there (Saturday) that was getting us and sometimes with the umpire’s calls,” outfielder Randy Arozarena said via team interpreter Manny Navarro. “Just kind of the name of the game.”
Though short of the major-league record (set by the Mets and Nationals in Max Scherzer’s 17K no-hitter on Oct. 3, 2015), the teams did break the record for a nine-inning Rays game (30, three times, the last time coming vs. Boston on Sept. 10, 2020) and were one shy of the 2021 MLB high.
Saturday was the third time this season the Rays have struck out 16 times (three shy of their team nine-inning record), and they have won all three games. The 14 strikeouts by Wheeler were the most by an opposing starter at the Trop since Kansas City’s Danny Duffy got 16 on Aug. 1, 2016.
Pitching in
Right-hander Collin McHugh will be the opener Sunday, capable of working two to three innings, with lefty Josh Fleming slated to get the bulk of the work. … A two-run fifth foiled Yarbrough’s chance to break what is now a 24-game winless streak as a starter, the longest in team history and tied for eighth longest for traditional (non-opener) starters since 1901, per baseball-reference.com data. The record is 28, shared by JoJo Reyes (Braves/Jays) and Matt Keough (A’s). Yarbrough last won as a starter in August 2019 and last as a starter at home in June 2018. Manager Kevin Cash said Yarbrough, who allowed three hits and two walks over 4 1/3 innings overall, was “awesome.” … Cash said there was “no update” on right-hander Luis Patino, who is considered close to returning from the injured list, sidelined since May 18 with a cut middle finger.
Miscellany
⋅ The Rays’ 14-1 streak matches their best 15-game run in franchise history (in 2013 and twice in 2004 as part of an overall 15-1 run).
⋅ Austin Meadows’ 27 RBIs in May are second most in team history; Evan Longoria had a record 31 in 2009. Meadows has three go-ahead hits in the eighth inning or later this season, surpassing his previous career total.
⋅ The Phillies lost outfielder Roman Quinn to a left Achilles injury; he went down rounding third in the two-run fifth inning, basically hopped home on his right leg and had to be carried off the field.
⋅ The announced, and distanced, crowd of 7,316 was the fifth largest of the season.
⋅ The Rays wore their throwback Devil Rays jerseys for the first of five scheduled times.
⋅ The back-to-back walks by Yandy Diaz and Meadows that led to a Rays run in the sixth were a big deal; Wheeler had only walked two batters over his previous 40 1/3 innings.
