Diamondbacks lose 12th straight, 8-6 to Cardinals - AZ Snake Pit

The Diamondbacks lost their 12th straight game to the Cardinals tonight to fall to 18-34. That is the longest losing streak in MLB this year, and the second longest losing streak in franchise history. The longest was 14 games between July 9th and July 25th, 2004

Madison Bumgarner had a rough night right out of the chute. Tommy Edman drew 7 pitch leadoff walk. Bumgarner had him picked off on a steal attempt but threw low and away to Pavin Smith who had to lunge for the ball and by the time he came up he had no chance to make a play at second. Bumgarner then threw a wild pitch to allow Edman to reach third, followed by a walk to Dylan Carlson. 15 pitches, 8 balls, two walks, a wild pickoff throw and a wild pitch to start the game. Not what you want.

Up stepped Paul Goldschmidt with a golden opportunity. He converted with a sac fly to center to score the game’s first run. He got Arenado to fly out to deep center, but Yadier Molina roped a double into the left field corner to score Carlson all the way from first. Tyler O’neil then blasted a cutter up and in into the left field bleachers, giving the Cardinals a 4-0 lead. Loss number 12 in a row was well on the way.

Bumgarner gave up a solo shot to Nolan Arenado in the 3rd and gave up two more runs in the 4th, one of them unearned thanks to a Carson Kelly error.

His final line was 4 IP, 5 hits, 7 runs, 6 earned, 4 BB, 4 K, & 2 HR. His season ERA rose to 5.15. He was wild and looked out of sorts all night.

On offense the D-backs tried to battle back. They managed to plate a single run in each of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd innings, but it felt like it should have been a lot more. Cardinals starter Johan Oviedo gifted them 6 walks in this game in his 4 ¹⁄₃ innings of work. David Peralta had an RBI single in the first, Carson Kelly had a sac fly in the 2nd, and Josh Reddick had an RBI single in the 3rd. But there were numerous chances to post a crooked number in the early and middle innings and they just couldn’t come through. Nick Ahmed and Tim Locastro had especially tough nights in this department, leaving 4 and 5 runners on respectively.

Pavin Smith drew walks his first two at bats, and then ripped a double down the right field line in the 5th. He followed that with a triple to the left center field gap in the 7th, but was stranded each time as his teammates failed to drive him home.

The bullpen was a bright spot. Riley Smith and Ryan Buchter each worked two scoreless innings to allow the team to try to get back in the game.

Arizona loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the 8th off of Ryan Helsely. Locastro doubled, Ketel Marte singled him to 3rd but TLo had to hold, and Josh Rojas drew his 3rd walk of the game. Carson Kelly caught a break when Molina dropped a popup behind the plate, but couldn’t capitalize, going down swinging. Eduardo Escobar single on a groundball through the hole into right to plate two runs however, drawing the D-backs to within 7-5. At least this would not be a Taco-less night. Daniel Ponce De Leon came on to pitch to Peralta , who struck out on a fastball up and out of the zone to end the threat.

With Joe Mantiply pitching the top of the 9th, Rojas committed a two base throwing error on a groundball by Goldy. That lead to the Cardinals 8th run as Goldy stole 3rd when nobody held him on 2nd, and then Arenado hit a sac fly to bring him home.

The D-backs had one more chance in the bottom of the 9th. Reddick hit a bloop double down the left field line with one out. Nick singled on a groundball that got under the glove of Arenado, sending Reddick to 3rd. It was the 3rd single of the night with a runner in scoring position that didn’t score a run. Locastro got hit by a pitch to load them up for Ketel Marte who grounded out to Goldy at first, scoring Reddick and bringing up Rojas. Rojas hit a nubber to short and was just barely out to end the game.

They were 7 for 19 with RISP, but 3 of those hits failed to bring in a run as the runner on 2nd had to stop at 3rd. They had 13 men left on base. It’s kind of hard to fault the offense when they score 6 runs however. The bottom line is Bumgarner put them in too deep a hole and despite 5 good relief innings and 6 runs it just wasn’t enough. The defense cost them two runs tonight as well, with errors from Kelly and Rojas. So it could be argued that was the difference in the game. Diamondhacks noted in the game thread the team has been out homered 18-4 during this losing streak. Hey, they played hard tonight. They just came up short because they weren’t the better team on the field.

Bumgarner when asked if he had any experience to share with his teammates about breaking a losing streak....

“If I did, I’d be spreading it like wildfire.........I got nuthin.”
