I got way too irrationally bummed about the Cubs’ scoreless streak in the bullpen ending yesterday – I think it wasn’t until it ended that I realized how much I’d wanted them to break the divisional era record (they were within five innings, man … ). That woulda been cool. Sigh. At least the new streak is already up to 3.2 innings.
• Zach Davies wound up with a 1.72 ERA this month over six starts. Your obvious caveats are that he did it in barely five innings per start, there was definitely some good luck mixed in, and his April was so god awful that you don’t “buy” it yet. But the results – for a command/control/soft contact guy – were really dang good, and really dang Davies-like. Even by FIP (which his ERA pretty much always beats by a lot), he was a league-average pitcher in May. No one will confuse him for the guy the Cubs sent out in the deal that brought back Davies and prospects, but he’s been acceptable for a while now.
• Thankfully this did not wind up mattering because Amir Garrett completely lost it from there, but this was called a swinging strike on Rafael Ortega, and there was no ability to review:

• That’s bad. That’s obviously a ludicrously wrong call, it should’ve loaded the bases with nobody out in the 6th inning of a tie game, and the fact that it was not reviewable is also a blind spot. Thankfully, like I said, Garrett fell apart and got clapped off by none other than Javy Báez, with whom he has had plenty of beef:

• Ortega also got his later on, hitting his first homer with the Cubs:

• Just a really nice quote from David Ross after yesterday’s win (and David Bote’s injury), via the Tribune: “If you have two equally talented groups, the team that cares about one another more is somehow going to find a way to beat the other team,” Ross said. “That’s just my opinion. I have no scientific evidence to (prove it), other than my experiences.”
• And more from Ross, via Cubs.com, on the rash of injuries: “I’ve never dealt with anything like this,” Ross said. “You do feel bad for the players. It’s one of those things, I guess it’s part of the season, but I’m thankful for the guys that are coming up, playing hard and having success. … That’s the sign of a good organization when you can get guys, pull them from the Minors, and they come up, fit right in, have good at-bats. It’s a testament to their professionalism and their hard work.”
• As for who comes up today to replace Bote, it kinda depends on the 40-man aspect. If Bote immediately goes on the 60-day IL, it could be someone like Sergio Alcantara, who sat out at Iowa last night. If it’s him, I hope he gets a shot to start immediately at second base. If the Cubs want to buy themselves some time on the 60-day IL decision/not DFA anyone, they might call up another reliever who is already on the 40-man. Seems silly with an already loaded bullpen, but it’s kinda like, welp, might as well call SOMEONE up.
• Do you know how f**king good you have to be to be the clear hottest reliever in THIS Cubs bullpen right now? This f**king good:

• Think about this streak:
The @Cubs have now played 25 games in a row without losing by multiple runs, the longest streak by an NL team in a season since the 1916 Giants!
The Giants did it in 29 straight (and only lost one game in that span).

• Just like that, Willson makes a forever memory for a kid and his family, AND makes the rest of us smile:
