DETROIT -- Starting pitcher Shane Bieber took a no-hitter into the seventh inning as the Cleveland Indians beat the Detroit Tigers 5-2 on Thursday afternoon at Comerica Park.
Tigers (19-31) have lost five of six. The Indians (27-21) took three of four in the series and trail the Chicago White Sox by just one game in the American League Central race.
Jonathan Schoop, the first batter in the seventh, drilled a 1-0 slider 402 feet to left field to break up Bieber’s no-hitter and his shutout.
The Indians haven’t had a no-hitter since Len Barker’s perfect game on May 15, 1981. The last no-hitter at Comerica Park was June 12, 2007, by Justin Verlander.
It was the only hit allowed by Bieber, who finished with 12 strikeouts in seven innings.
Tigers starter Matthew Boyd allowed one run through the first five, but was lifted after being battered by three straight batters in the sixth, including a two-run home run by Eddie Rosario.
Bryan Garcia, Joe Jimenez, Daniel Norris and Derek Holland each pitched an inning of relief for the Tigers.
The Tigers got two more hits after Bieber’s exit: Jeimer Candelario had a bloop double in the eighth inning and Victor Reyes hit an RBI triple in the ninth.
Up next: The Tigers open a three-game series with the New York Yankees on Friday at 7:10 p.m. Rookie Casey Mize (3-3, 3.42 ERA) will face Yankees ace Gerrit Cole (6-2, 1.81).
