LOS ANGELES ― About two-thirds of the available seats at Dodger Stadium were empty for Friday night’s game between the Dodgers and San Francisco Giants. By 2021 standards, that was enough to make the place feel full.

The announced crowd of 17,873 included a number of fully vaccinated patrons in the right-field bleachers. In left field, attendance was relatively sparse. There was ample room for Giants left fielder Mike Tauchman to reach above the wall in the bottom of the ninth inning, glove an Albert Pujols fly ball above the pale blue padding, and stun the stadium into silence.

It was the catch of the year. It put Pujols’ 669th career home run on hold. The Dodgers would have to wait until the 10th inning to lose 8-5, their first defeat in five games against the Giants this season.

The Dodgers were trailing 5-2 and down to their final out when Austin Barnes hit a three-run home run against Tyler Rogers to tie the score. Barnes’ second home run of 2021 was the first pinch-hit home run of his career.

“To do it and give our team a chance to win was exciting,” Barnes said. “Albert’s next AB was pretty close.”

Pujols clobbered a 1-and-2 fastball from Rogers above the wall. Tauchman never broke stride before extending above the wall to make the catch. He bounced off the padding and hid the ball in his glove on the ground. Half of the players in the Dodgers’ dugout emptied onto the field, sensing a walk-off victory.

“That was an unbelievable play,” Barnes said. “I thought Albert got it. The dugout was about to go crazy, I think. It would have been fun. Great play by him.”

When Tauchman rose to his feet displaying the ball, the game proceeded to extra innings.

Kenley Jansen (0-2) did not fare well in the 10th. Steven Duggar was automatically placed on second base to begin the inning, and he scored on a one-out single by LaMonte Wade.

Jansen walked Mike Yastrzemski and struck out Buster Posey, whose three-run home run against Blake Treinen put the Giants ahead 5-2 in the eighth inning. The next batter, Evan Longoria, clubbed a double over the head of Sheldon Neuse in right field. Wade and Yastrzemski crossed home plate to provide the final score.

Jansen was pitching in a non-save situation on the second day of back-to-back appearances. More detrimental than that, Manager Dave Roberts said, Jansen “was too concerned with the runner at second base. He sped up his delivery too much.”

The veteran closer has suffered two losses and blown a save in his only three extra-innings appearances this season. The Dodgers (31-20) are 1-7 in extra-inning games – a conspicuous reason why they’re 1½ games behind San Diego (33-19), and tied with San Francisco (31-20) for second place in the top-heavy National League West.

Justin Turner went 3 for 5, and Matt Beaty went 2 for 2 with a home run. Starting pitcher Walker Buehler, facing the Giants for the second time in less than a week, continued his recent run of success.

The right-hander mixed in a few more curveballs and cut fastballs than he did last Saturday in San Francisco but achieved a similar result. Buehler only went to a three-ball count against two of the 23 batters he faced. He threw 92 pitches in all, 57 for strikes, and has completed at least six innings in all 10 of his starts this season.

By allowing two runs in six innings, Buehler only lacked the run support needed to record his third victory in as many starts.

The Giants manufactured a run in the top of the second inning. Brandon Crawford doubled, advanced to third on a passed ball – one of two by Dodgers catcher Will Smith – then tagged up and scored on a sacrifice fly by Donovan Solano.

In the fifth inning, Duggar did something no Giants hitter had done in 41 innings against Buehler: he hit a home run. Buehler’s 0-and-1 curveball caught the heart of the strike zone, and Duggar pummelled it 384 feet to right field.

Buehler worked around a leadoff walk in the first inning, and a leadoff single in the third. He walked two more batters in the sixth. But with runners on second and third and two outs, left fielder Yoshi Tsutsugo tracked down a fly ball on the warning track to rob Crawford of the potential go-ahead hit. As Tsutsugo smiled, Buehler raised his right arm in a fist and exhaled a sigh of relief.

Since watching his earned-run average spike to 3.45 on May 11, Buehler has lowered it to 2.66 by allowing just three runs over his last three appearances.

“I think April it seemed like every mistake he made was going out of the ballpark,” Roberts said of Buehler. “Hitters are being aggressive. That’s why there’s not as many (strikeouts).”

Each time the Giants scored, the Dodgers answered. Down 1-0 in the bottom of the second, the Dodgers tied the score with one swing against Anthony DeSclafani.

Beaty turned on a first-pitch fastball from the right-hander and launched it a geometrically satisfying 45 degrees toward the short porch in right field. Giants right fielder Mike Yastrzemski stretched his glove into the first row of seats, but couldn’t make the catch. It was Beaty’s second home run of the season.

After Duggar’s homer put San Francisco ahead 2-1 in the top of the fifth inning, the Dodgers rallied in the bottom of the fifth.

Turner singled with one out, and went to second base when Smith drew the second of his three walks. Chris Taylor singled on a hard-hit grounder that glanced off Crawford’s glove into short left field, and Turner scored to tie the score at 2-2.

With Beaty due up against DeSclafani, the Giants turned to left-handed reliever Calab Baragar. Roberts replaced the left-handed Beaty with the right-handed-hitting Pujols with a chance to add to the scoreboard, but Baragar retired Pujols on a fly ball to end the inning.
