EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- Your Covid-19 vaccine record card is likely one of the most important documents you will receive all year. Health providers urge you to protect the document and keep it in your records after you're fully vaccinated.
If you accidentally lose or damage the card, there are some things you can do.
First, try contacting your vaccine provider to request additional documentation. If that does not work, Texans can access the state's vaccine registry "ImmTrac2." All providers are required to report vaccine data into this registry.
The registry is part of the Texas Department of State Health Services. Texans can click this link to access the portal. If you're a member of the general public, you can then click the button that reads 'General Public & First Responders' to access instructions for requesting immunization records.
The registry offers lifetime immunization records beyond the Covid-19 vaccine data.
El Paso city and health leaders encourage you to protect your vaccination data and maintain it after receiving all necessary doses.
"Depending on what the state and CDC report out, we take our guidance from the state, but depending on what they're reporting out we may have need for a booster shot," said City of El Paso spokeswoman Laura Cruz-Acosta. "So we want to be able to know what it is that you have received previously."
A lost vaccine card can also be a safety concern. Scammers can use information found on the card to steal your identity.
"Some of the information on there is information about your personal information, such as your birth date in some cases," Cruz-Acosta said. "The information on that card is important to you so you have to protect and ward against possible identification scams."
