A new circuit called Balaton Park was completed and launched in Hungary this week, after an investment of over €200 million, built to F1 standards in terms of grading. Could we see the long-standing Hungaroring circuit lose its Grand Prix?
The new circuit took four years to build and is located just over 80km from Budapest, near Lake Balaton, a popular tourist destination in the country. Describing it as the “highest FIA standard race track to be built in Central Europe for over 15 years”, the circuit management organised a press event to launch the track, with former Formula 1 driver Giancarlo Fisichella driving the 4.115km long, 16-corner layout.

Track has ‘character’
“Driving on Balaton Park for the first time, I was impressed by its character,” said the Italian driver.
“The track really has it all – it’s an exciting mix of high-speed corners, tricky hairpins and cool chicanes. It’s a track that ‘flows’ well and gives you a great racing feel.”
“The first corner and the end of the back straight are great places for overtaking. Overall, Balaton Park is a treat in terms of driving.”
Built to F1 standard
Balaton Park has been designed to FIA Grade 1 standards and meets the FIM regulations for high level car and motorbike racing, namely MotoGP. However, at this stage only a Grade 2 licence has been applied for. A Formula 1 car cannot yet compete on this track.
Former F1 test driver Chanoch Nissany, who took part in a test session for Minardi in 2005 and is the father of current F2 driver Roy Nissany, is the chairman of the circuit, with the second phase of the project to include a hotel being completed on the site as well as the construction of a motor museum.
It should be remembered that Formula 1 races at the Hungaroring in Budapest, whose contract was recently renewed until 2027. After this date, the circuit could lose its GP to the new track.
